Makita 2.5 HP Air Compressor Review

Overview

The Makita 2.5 HP Air Compressor blows away the competition with its built-in features such as the super quiet motor that draws only 12.3 amps to operate, a lower 1720rpm rating, and a heavy-duty Intake Air Filter system like no other. It’s easy to see how this unit can outlast and outperform everyone else, as it also delivers 4.2CFM at 90PSI and is equipped with a lever-handle valve drain system to get rid of condensation build-up in the tank.

It also uses an exclusive finned discharge tubing to increase heat dissipation while reducing moisture in the lines, while it’s efficiently removable cast iron cylinder reduces wear for increased pump life. The Good

Our review of the Makita 2.5 HP Air Compressor put this portable air compressor through its paces. Let’s take a look at some of the best features of the Makita 2.5 HP Air Compressor…

Built for Performance:

The Makita 2.5 HP Air Compressor uses a cast iron pump with a Big Bore cylinder and piston that is engineered to provide faster recovery time and improved efficiency. Its low AMP draw reduces incidents of a tripped breaker upon startup, and its 4.2-gallon twin stacked tank sustains an operating pressure of 130 PSI and delivers 40 PSI at 4.8 CFM and 90 PSI at 4.2 CFM, which is enough to support two users. Its pump is oil-lubricated for cooler running temperatures and reduces wear and tear, while its built-in thermal overload serves as additional motor protection.

Designed for Convenience:

Its roll cage construction provides complete protection to withstand extreme job site environments. The Makita 2.5 HP Air Compressor also uses a lever handle valve tank drain to improve upon standard designs for easier maintenance, while its sizeable automotive style industrial air filter is used for increased air intake and better performance. Lastly, its pump runs at a lower 1,730 RPM, resulting in lower noise levels (79bB) and improved durability.

The Bad

The Makita 2.5 HP Air Compressor attempts to give us the best that it has to offer, but it suffers from a few system issues. For instance, a customer has noticed that the machine works well, but using other tools with it — the cut off tool, for example — doesn’t let the compressor recover fast. This may be because the tank is less than six gallons, so it’s not as effective as competitors with a bigger tank. The customer’s verdict? Don’t buy this compressor if you plan to use air tools, otherwise, you risk wasting $30 for a product that won’t work at its full capacity.

Other customers have complained about how the Makita 2.5 HP Air Compressor is so weak that it won’t even allow him to do simple tasks. In the end, he wasn’t able to do his job as a flooring installer to install hardwood floors. For its price range, this customer was not happy, and to top it off, the company wouldn’t accept returns after just one month of use.

The Bottom Line

In the end, the Makita 2.5 HP Air Compressor charges a bit too much for a payoff that’s not entirely worth it. For those who have a few hundred dollars extra to invest in this product then, it’s not a problem, and this air compressor would be an excellent addition to all your equipment. However, if you’re looking for a more affordable alternative, there are plenty of other choices that offer a reasonable price tag along with performance that’s as good or even better.

All in all, the Makita 2.5 HP Air Compressor is our least favorite choice, not just because of its hefty price but also because of the company’s lackluster effort into making this an even better air compressor. Aside from its system issues, it also suffers from terrible customer service, as they refuse to help those who need assistance because of its functional errors. So, to sum up, if you’re in the market to look for an air compressor but are on a budget, do yourself a favor and steer clear of this product.
