Overview

Embrace Pet Insurance was founded in 2003 by people that are passionate about animal healthcare. They’re headquartered in Ohio and are underwritten by American Modern Home Insurance Company. Embrace is on a mission to help dogs and cats live happier and healthier lives with comprehensive coverage of pet medical care.

With personalized policies and flexible wellness plans, Embrace Pet Insurance is the favorite option for many pet parents and their veterinarians. If you sign your dog or cat up for Embrace, you’ll get 24-hour access to the Embrace pet helpline, the ease of an annual deductible, and reimbursement for vet exams and alternative therapies.

Coverage Details

Our Embrace Pet Insurance review is going to show you some of their great coverage benefits. We’ve gathered up all the info on what’s covered by Embrace Pet Insurance for you, so you don’t have to waste your own time when trying to choose the right coverage for your pet.

Accidents & Illnesses: If your dog or cat becomes sick or injured when covered by Embrace, up to 90% of the total bill will be reimbursed to you, including emergency and specialty care.

Breed-Specific Conditions: Many dogs suffer from breed-specific conditions, such as French Bulldogs with narrow nasal passages or Dalmatians with recurring bladder stones. Unlike other pet insurance companies, Embrace will reimburse you for the treatment of these issues.

Cancer & Chronic Illnesses: If your pet is ever diagnosed with cancer or another chronic illness, Embrace will stand by you with lifetime coverage, instead of dropping your sick pet, as other providers would.

Hereditary & Congenital Conditions: Some breeds are born with hereditary medical conditions that need to be addressed later in life. Embrace is proud to provide health insurance for pets with congenital conditions.

Hospitalization & Surgeries: If your pet needs to have surgery to treat an injury or illness, Embrace will reimburse you for the cost of the procedure, along with any related hospital care.

Prescription Medications: When your pet needs medication to treat a condition, the cost of the prescription can quickly add up to hundreds of dollars. Embrace Pet Insurance will reimburse you for up to 90% of most prescription meds.

Dental Illnesses: If your dog or cat ever suffers from a broken tooth, periodontal disease, or any other tooth-related illness, Embrace will reimburse you for the vet fees to treat your pet.

Alternative Therapies: Embrace offers coverage for many alternative therapies that other pet insurance companies won’t, such as chiropractic and acupuncture treatments, as well as hydrotherapy and laser treatments.

Behavioral Therapies: If your pet is having some behavioral issues their doctor would like to address, most pet insurance companies won’t cover the cost. But Embrace is happy to reimburse you for any behavioral therapy performed by a licensed veterinarian.

Like all pet insurance companies, Embrace does have some coverage exclusions you should know about. What’s not covered by Embrace pet insurance includes pre-existing conditions, pregnancy care, or cosmetic procedures.

Plan Rates & Sample Quotes

Although we found Embrace’s monthly premiums to be a bit on the high side when compared to other pet insurance companies, you can easily keep your costs down by choosing a lower annual coverage limit and a higher deductible.

Embrace also offers a variety of discounts to help keep pet insurance within your budget, including a 10% multi-pet discount, a 5% discount for having your pet spayed or neutered, and another 5% off if you’re a member of the military or pay your premiums via automatic bank draft.

Embrace makes getting a free online pet insurance quote quick and easy. But in case you want to get a good overview of what you can expect your Embrace pet insurance premium to be each month, we’ve gathered up some sample policy quotes for you.

Domestic Shorthair Cat: 1 year old, Male, Florida (32818) covered for $21.37 per month.

Golden Retriever: 3 years old, Female, Illinois (60007) covered for $40.48 per month.

French Bulldog: 6 years old, Male, California (94102) covered for $107.11 per month.

German Shepherd: 2 years old, Female, New York (10003) covered for $42.19 per month.

Please Note: All sample policy quotes come with a $200 annual deductible, 90% reimbursement rate, and a $15,000 yearly coverage limit.

Reimbursements & Deductibles

Embrace Pet Insurance offers some the industry’s most customizable reimbursement percentages. You can choose from rates anywhere between 65% to 90%, and Embrace will quickly get you paid out. And you can pick anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000 for your annual coverage amount.

Processing your pet insurance claim with Embrace is quick and easy, thanks to being able to submit it via mail, fax, email, or online portal. Simply send Embrace the paid invoice for your pet’s medical care, and they will get you reimbursed as soon as possible, either with a paper check or their optional direct deposit service.

Reimbursement Structure: Actual Cost

Minimum Reimbursement: 65%

Maximum Reimbursement: 90%

As with the best pet insurance companies, Embrace allows you to choose the amount of your annual deductible, which can also make a big difference when it comes to keeping your monthly costs down. You can choose your own deductible, anywhere from $100 to $1,000.

Embrace also offers a program called Healthy Pet Deductible, which decreases your annual deductible by $50 for every year that you don’t file a pet insurance claim. This is a great perk that we didn’t find with many of the other top pet insurance providers.

Deductible Type: Annual

Minimum Deductible: $100

Maximum Deductible: $1,000

Getting great pet insurance coverage doesn’t have to be expensive, especially if you take advantage of some of Embrace’s awesome discount offers and the ability to completely customize your pet’s plan coverage, reimbursement rate, and annual deductible.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Maybe you’re asking yourself, “Should I enroll my pet in Embrace Pet insurance?” If so, one of the top things to consider is the age of your pet and any waiting periods the company might have, in order to help you get the best coverage and value.

Embrace enrolls puppies and kittens from 6-weeks of age and older. And unlike other pet insurance companies, you can enroll older dogs or cats up until the age of 14. Just keep in mind there’s a standard 14-day waiting period for the coverage of illnesses and accidents.

Minimum Enrollment Age: 6 weeks

Maximum Enrollment Age: 14 years

Standard Waiting Period: 14 days

Orthopedic Waiting Period: 6 months

We recommend you take waiting periods into consideration when shopping for pet insurance. If you have a younger dog or cat without any known health concerns, Embrace Pet Insurance is a great choice, thanks to very reasonable waiting periods.

Claims & Customer Support

If you have a question about your pet insurance policy or want to make changes to your pet’s coverage, you can reach one of the friendly members of the Embrace customer support team by email, fax, phone, or live chat Monday through Saturday during regular EST business hours.

Having a pet emergency? Embrace not only gives you the confidence of having comprehensive pet insurance coverage, but they also provide their members with access to 24/7 expert advice from a veterinarian with their whiskerDocs pet helpline. And it’s all free of charge!

To file a claim for your pet’s medical care with Embrace, you can simply download the form on their website and give it to the staff at the vet hospital where your pet was treated. Once the form has been completed, you can return it to Embrace by fax, email, or in your online MyEmbrace portal. Most claims are reimbursed by Embrace Pet Insurance within 5 business days of submission.

Pet Owner Opinions

As a part of our review of Embrace Pet Insurance, we wanted to see what actual pet owners had to say. We turned to Facebook and Yelp to get some real info from Embrace pet insurance customers. Here’s what they had to say…

I highly recommend Embrace pet insurance!  The price is reasonable and our claims were quickly handled.  We lost our dog unexpectedly and her illness expenses were covered less the deductible and percentage.  The staff was very sensitive to our loss and we felt they really cared for us. I tried different pet insurance before this and two different claims were denied very impersonally.  Try Embrace! Nancy P, Yelp 10/15/18

I have had Embrace for 3 years. I did not need to use the coverage for the first two years and my deductible lowered by $50 each year, which was nice. I did have quite a price increase going into my third year, but I shopped around and even with the price increase, it was still cheaper than other overages. This year, unfortunately, both of my dogs have had thousands of dollars of issues, ranging from dog bite wounds, tumor removal, disc disease, etc., every single one of my claims was covered with no issues. Checks were issued very quickly for a refund. I would not have been able to afford their vet bills if I didn’t have Embrace! Court L, Facebook 11/8/18

We couldn’t be happier with our experience with Embrace. Our first dog, Gwen, had osteosarcoma and a very expensive course of treatment before she passed away. We did not have insurance and regretted it. When we adopted our current dogs, we knew we would be getting insurance for all of them. Our dog Ginger recently suffered a minor injury to her ear that required surgery to correct it. The claims process through Embrace was very easy and straightforward–all I had to do was take pictures of our itemized bill, receipt, and a very short form filled out by our vet about the procedure, and submit these documents online. Ginger had to have her stitches stay in for three weeks after surgery, and the claim was filed, approved, and paid by Embrace well before her stitches came out. We are glad we made the right choice in pet insurance. Thank you! Jenny S, Yelp 10/3/18

The Good

As with all of our editor reviews, we put Embrace through its paces, so you don’t have to waste your time or money while looking for the best insurance coverage for your pet. The following are some of our favorite Embrace Pet Insurance benefits…

Optional Routine Care Coverage

If you want to keep your pet happy and healthy, Embrace gives you the option to reimburse you for routine vet care like training, grooming, and vaccinations with their Wellness Rewards plan. You can use this coverage starting the day you sign up for Embrace Pet Insurance, and there aren’t any itemized limits on reimbursements.

Personalized Pet Insurance Policies

Embrace believes that you shouldn’t have to pay for something you’re not going to use. That’s why they offer totally personalized pet insurance plans, which give you nose-to-paws coverage against illnesses and accidents, no matter what annual deductible, reimbursement rate, or yearly maximum you choose for your pet.

Pay Less with Healthy Pet Deductible

Few pet insurance companies make it as easy to save money as Embrace does with their exclusive discounts. You’ll also get the chance to save even more with their Healthy Pet Deductible program, which reduces your annual deductible by $50 for every year that you don’t file a pet insurance claim.

24/7 Access to Veterinary Advice

Pet emergencies can be scary and Embrace completely understands, which is why they’ve partnered up with whiskerDocs to give their policyholders access to 24-hour advice from licensed veterinarians. You can call in at any time and get the behavioral and medical questions you have about your pet quickly answered.

The Bad

Unlike some of the other top pet insurance companies, Embrace doesn’t offer an unlimited annual claims option, but with up to $30,000 per year in available coverage, we weren’t dissuaded from recommending Embrace Pet Insurance to our friends and family members.

We also found that Embrace charges a $25 enrollment fee, but with so many available discounts, including up to 10% off for enrolling multiple pets, plus their highly-customizable plans and Healthy Pets Deductible program, we feel as if Embrace is still a better value than most other pet insurance providers.

The Bottom Line

Even with the addition of an upfront enrollment fee and the lack of unlimited yearly coverage, we couldn’t help but be impressed by what Embrace Pet Insurance has to offer pet parents. You’ll get coverage against breed-specific conditions and can enroll senior pets without worrying about them being dropped later down the line.

Embrace also offers optional wellness plans to help keep pets healthy, which we didn’t encounter with many of the other pet insurance providers that we’ve reviewed. And you’ll benefit from short waiting periods when enrolling your pet, as well some of the most flexible reimbursement rates available.

Personalize your pet’s insurance with Embrace and get 24/7 expert advice from veterinarians!
