DJI SPARK Review

Overview

The DJI Spark is a versatile mini drone, featuring all of DJI’s signature technologies so you can seize the moment whenever you feel inspired. This mid-range drone may be pricey, but it comes with many smart and attractive features that help you explore every single nook and cranny of the unknown.

Some of its features are Quick Launch, DJI Go 4 App, TapFly, and more. It also comes with intelligent flight control options, a mechanical gimbal, and a camera with incredible image quality. Using these tools, Spark takes you where you want to go and empowers you to push your creative boundaries.

The Good

Our review of the DJI Spark put this drone through its paces. Let’s take a look at some of the best features of the DJI Spark…

Intelligent Features: Using FaceAware, the DJI Spark performs a quick launch, lifting off from your hand by recognizing your face. It also has Palm Control mode — simple control features which allow it to take aerial photos — no need for a smartphone or a remote controller, the Spark will use your hand gestures. The DJI Spark also uses Active Track, which automatically recognizes objects of different shapes and sizes and tracks them according to what they are and how fast they move. It can fly for up to 16 minutes with a fully-charged battery, to capture more footage.

Create With Ease: The DJI Spark has intuitive controls and intelligent flight modes that help you create cinematic aerial videos with just a few taps. When used with the DJI GO 4 app, you can use editing templates and filters to edit and share videos straight to social media quickly.

Superior Engineering: With a 2-axis mechanical gimbal and UltraSmooth technology, the Spark has dramatically less shake and rolling shutter effect, which keep shots stable and detailed. It also has a powerful lens, giving images that are consistently sharp and vivid — its camera has an f/2.6 wide-angle lens with a 25 mm equivalent focal length. Small and compact, the Spark’s camera features a 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor, which allows shooting stabilized video at 1080p and stills at 12 MP.

Advanced Functions: Its lightweight, aerodynamic, and sleek design allow the Spark to soar through the air. It has incredible propulsion that offers a steady flight even against 31 mph (50 kph) strong winds in Sport Mode. In TapFly mode, Spark uses vision technology to fly in the direction of the tap in your smartphone, or it can follow the exact location while actively sensing obstacles. The DJI Spark also has innovative HD Wi-Fi technology that allows for 720p real-time video transmission from up to 1.2 mi (2 km) away when unobstructed.

The Bad

The DJI Spark does offer excellent value for money, being more affordable than other models without sacrificing quality. However, it isn’t the best drone for one primary reason: it suffers from sudden shutdowns and battery loss. This may be forgivable for some people, but imagine flying your drone over the ocean to capture gorgeous sights of your island getaway during one of your vacations. Unless you want your drone to sleep with the fishies, you will probably spend a few anxious minutes trying to retrieve it.

A smaller issue is that it can get signal issues at 30 meters and above, which if not detected early on, may result in your DJI Spark getting stuck on a tree 30ft up in the air. But again, this drone was so close to being the perfect model; it just didn’t get the final adjustments it needed before getting released.

The Bottom Line

The DJI Spark came so close to being the dream drone; it can give fantastic pictures, deliver a solid performance, and the best part, it costs less than other mid-to-high range drones of the same quality. But due to unwanted problems when it comes to flying, we may not get our money’s worth. At the worst situations, giving us the 16 minutes worth of flight time might be cut down to less than that, or worse: it could just be money down the drain.

Despite its strong performance and array of features, the DJI Spark is a bit of a 50/50. On the one hand, you have a near-perfect drone to talk with you on all your adventures, but on the other hand, you have a $500 regret waiting to happen. The good thing is, you have that chance to end up with a flawless unit which will give you endless days of fun, exploration, and excitement.
