Coverage from experts in the pet insurance industry. Multiple plan options to choose from. No age limits to enroll dogs or cats.
Crum & Forster was founded in 1997, making them the second oldest pet insurance company in the United States. In 2006, they partnered with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to form ASPCA Pet Health Insurance. Since then, the company has been on a mission to help keep animals healthy and happy, while also giving their owners financial peace of mind.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance offers multiple plans from accident-only to complete coverage for both dogs and cats. With no per-condition or special caps on coverage for any animal illness, including congenital and hereditary conditions, pet insurance from the ASPCA is the perfect choice for many pet parents looking for the financial backing of a well-known expert in the field.
Our ASPCA Pet Health Insurance review is going to show you some of their best coverage benefits. We’ve gathered up all the info on what’s covered by ASPCA pet insurance for you, so you don’t have to waste your own time when trying to choose the best coverage for your pet.
Injuries & Illnesses: Having a sick or injured pet can be very scary, but if you’re protected by pet insurance from the ASPCA, you can worry less about the vet bill and more about getting your dog or cat feeling better.
Non-Routine Vet Exams: If your pet needs to see a veterinarian for any reason other than a wellness checkup, the exam fee will be reimbursed if you have the Complete Coverage plan from ASPCA Pet Health Insurance.
Emergencies & Surgeries: When your pet is injured or becomes ill after regular vet office hours, you’ll end up having to pay higher rates at an animal ER. Luckily, if you have the Complete Coverage plan from ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, you’ll only have to pay as little as 10% of the bill.
Hospitalization & Medications: There are times in almost every pet’s life when they need to spend some time in the hospital to get well again. And they’ll most likely also be sent home with pricey prescription meds. When you’re covered by pet insurance from the ASPCA, up to 90% of those costs will be reimbursed to you.
Alternative & Behavioral Therapies: If your pet’s vet thinks they might benefit from some behavioral or alternative therapy, you don’t have to start stressing out about the cost. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance provides reimbursement for these types of procedures with their Complete Coverage plan for dogs and cats.
Accident-Only Coverage: If you’re a budget-conscious pet parent that still wants to make sure your four-legged family member is covered in case of an emergency, you can go with this low-cost plan from ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, and get reimbursed for pet accidents.
Preventative Care Coverage: If you have multiple pets or a young dog or cat that goes to the vet for regular preventative care quite often, you can add on this additional coverage to your ASPCA pet insurance policy to keep from breaking the bank.
Like all pet insurance companies, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance does have some coverage exclusions you should know about. What’s not covered by ASPCA pet insurance includes pre-existing conditions, cosmetic procedures, or breeding costs.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance offers multiple pricing options to pet parents, in an effort to keep pet insurance affordable for everyone. Their top-tier policy starts at around $50 for dogs and $20 for cats, but they do have an accident-only option and a multi-pet discount to help lower monthly premiums for policyholders.
ASPCA makes getting a free online pet insurance quote quick and easy. But in case you want to get a good idea of what you can expect your ASPCA Pet Health Insurance monthly premium to be, we’ve gathered up some sample policy quotes for you.
Domestic Shorthair Cat: 1 year old, Male, Florida (32818) covered for $17.45 per month.

In an effort to make pet insurance affordable for everyone, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance gives you the option of choosing your own reimbursement percentages. You can pick a rate of 70%, 80%, or 90% to help you get the optimal mix of value and health insurance coverage.
Reimbursement Structure: Actual Cost
Minimum Reimbursement: 70%
Maximum Reimbursement: 90%
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance also allows you to have your choice of an annual deductible, with options of $100, $250, or $500. This is just another way that you can be assured that your pet’s health insurance will fit into your monthly budget and get the most return on your pet insurance investment.
Deductible Type: Annual
Minimum Deductible: $100
Maximum Deductible: $500
Just keep in mind that if you choose a lower deductible and higher percentage rate, you’re going to have a bigger premium to pay each month. Luckily, ASPCA gives you plenty of options to choose from when it comes to pet insurance policy pricing.
Maybe you’re asking yourself, “Should I enroll my pet in ASPCA Pet Health Insurance?” If so, you need to be sure to keep any waiting periods or age requirements for enrollment in mind when you’re shopping for pet insurance.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance enrolls puppies and kittens starting at just 8-weeks-old. And there is absolutely no age limit for enrollment with ASPCA, which makes getting older pets the all-important pet insurance coverage they need much easier than it is with other companies.
Minimum Enrollment Age: 8 weeks
Maximum Enrollment Age: None
When it comes to waiting periods on pet insurance coverage, the ASPCA has some of the shortest we’ve seen for dog hip dysplasia surgery or cruciate ligament treatment. Both of these painful conditions are very pricey to diagnose and treat, which makes the short 2-week waiting period even more of a benefit for many pet parents.
Accidents Waiting Period: 14 days
Illnesses Waiting Period: 14 days
Hip Dysplasia Waiting Period: 14 days
Cruciate Ligament Waiting Period: 14 days
If you’re looking for pet insurance with no age limits and short waiting periods, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance just might be the perfect choice for you and your fur babies. You won’t have to worry about waiting for long to get your pet treated if the unexpected happens or they need hip dysplasia surgery soon after signing up.
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance has a team of knowledgeable and helpful pet experts ready to help you with your policy and get you answers to your questions. You can reach the ASPCA customer support team by phone or email 7 days a week during regular EST business hours.
You’ll also get access to your own online ASPCA Pet Health Insurance portal, which lets you update or change any part of your pet’s policy 24/7, as well as keep track of any claims you’ve filed, or questions you’ve asked of the ASPCA support team.
Submitting an ASPCA pet insurance claim couldn’t be easier! You can use their mobile app for iPhone or Android to tell them what happened with your pet, snap a quick picture of the vet bill, and let the ASPCA team handle the rest. And your claim will be processed and paid out within just a couple of weeks.
As a part of our review of ASPCA pet insurance, we wanted to see what actual pet owners had to say. We turned to Yelp and Trustpilot to get some real info from ASPCA Pet Health Insurance customer reviews. Here’s what they had to say…
We have had a wonderful experience with ASPCA Pet Health Insurance. Our French Bulldog required surgery on her palate and tonsils to increase her airflow and ASPCA covered most of the cost and reimbursed us for our expenses very quickly. I cannot say enough positive about what great insurance this has been. We have three Frenchies on this insurance and it has consistently been the best pet insurance we have ever been on. Claudia G, Yelp 10/10/18
My dear pup was injured very soon after I opened an account. The people at the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance have been very responsive to helping me through the application procedure and have fulfilled everything I signed up for. Also, I received an email at each stage of the process so I wasn’t in the dark about what was happening. I am very impressed with the caring staff and honest fulfillment. Yona F, Trustpilot 12/8/18
The people at ASPCA pet insurance are very helpful with what plans are best for our family. They are friendly and always asking how our furry friends are. Their coverage is very good and has helped our family out a lot. It would be very hard financially to have 2 dogs if we didn’t have this wonderful insurance. I tell all my friends and family this is a must when they have animals. You just never know when unfortunate things will if ever, happen to your pet. Tracy A, Trustpilot 10/29/18
We got this insurance a few years ago after our dog spent almost a week in doggy intensive care after a bout of leptospirosis. It was apparent that she was prone to illness and we wanted to avoid another $5000 plus vet bill. She is an older dog with a pre-existing condition so it wasn’t cheap over $1000 per year. In the last six months she’s ended up back in the MSPCA hospital twice, the most recent time several days for severe pancreatitis. Both visits combined racked up a bill of about $6000 of which over $5000 was paid back by ASPCA insurance after deductibles etc. Not perfect but we have been happy with their coverage and response time. Kevin B, Yelp 4/9/18
As with all of our editor reviews, we put ASPCA Pet Health Insurance through its paces, so you don’t have to waste your time or money while looking for the best coverage for your pet. The following are some of our favorite ASPCA pet insurance benefits…
Multiple Plans to Choose From
At ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, they get that not everyone has the same needs when it comes to pet insurance. That’s why they offer multiple plan options, ranging from Complete Coverage to Accident-Only, in order to help you fit all-important healthcare benefits into your monthly budget.
Optional Wellness Coverage
Unlike many of the other pet insurance providers out there that don’t offer any type of routine vet care reimbursement at all, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance makes it easy and affordable to add pet wellness coverage to your pet’s policy.
Visit the Vet of Your Choice
Many times, pet parents discover too late that when they sign up for pet insurance, they’re locked into seeing a specific set of approved care providers. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance wants you to keep seeing the vet you and your pet are comfortable with, which is why they allow you to use any licensed veterinarian in America or Canada with their pet insurance policies.
30-Day Free Look Period
Want to try pet insurance out for yourself but you’re worried about getting stuck in a contract? With ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, you can try their service for a full month to see if it’s the right fit for you and your pet. If you realize it’s not, they’ll refund your purchase price to you, as long as you cancel within the first 30 days and don’t make a claim in that period.
While testing out ASPCA Pet Health Insurance for ourselves, we were a bit disappointed to find that making changes to some items in your pet’s policy wasn’t as easy as it could or should be, in our opinion. But having said that, we also found that the ASPCA pet insurance support team was super-helpful and quick to address our concerns.
As we researched ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, we did discover that some policyholders reported longer wait times for claims reimbursement, but we also found many more that stated they were paid quickly for any claims they filed. In our experience, pet insurance claims with the ASPCA were handled promptly and well within the stated 2-week processing period.
